Tools for Wildlife Management: One-Way Doors

One-way doors allow you to remove animals from any home or building without having to trap or handle them. They permit the animal to leave, but not re-enter a building and come in a variety of designs, sizes, and materials to target different wildlife species.

One-way doors allow you to remove animals from any home or building without having to trap or handle them. They permit the animal to leave, but not re-enter a building and come in a variety of designs, sizes, and materials to target different wildlife species.

Before installing a one-way door you must conduct a thorough inspection to make sure that any young animals present are mobile to ensure they can exit via the one-way door. The doors are only effective if the animal can find and use the exit, but cannot force its way back through the door or find another way into the building. If a mother has been separated from immobile young and they are still inside the building, she will be highly motivated to find or create a new entry into the structure!

For optimal trapping conditions, it is best to place the door over the hole the animal has made in the building and fasten the one-way door to the outside of the building. As the animal exits the building and pushes its way through the door, a spring-loaded, automatic closing door drops behind the animal on its way out and places the animal outside of the building. The animal will not be able to re-enter the building because of the special design of the one-way door.

If a count of the animal is needed, a one-way door can be purchased with a sliding rear door. The actual length of the door is increased to provide extra holding room for the animal, and a sliding rear door is added at the rear of the door. Now, you can actually trap several rodents at a time as they each take their turn exiting the building. One-way doors are available in a variety of sizes, ranging from rat/chipmunk size to raccoon size.
