A Dedication to Education

Jennie Hughes – Wilson’s Pest Control – Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Growing up, Jennie Hughes wasn’t scared of bugs. The daughter of an entomologist, she was too busy learning about them to be afraid.

Growing up, Jennie Hughes wasn’t scared of bugs. The daughter of an entomologist, she was too busy learning about them to be afraid.

Now she’s the one doing the educating. As the biologist at Wilson’s Pest Control, Hughes’s daily responsibilities can range from handling payroll to crawling under houses. But recently, she found herself teaching a roomful of teachers.

When the business’s Adopt-A-School partners at Westwood Elementary School approached her with a roach problem, Hughes decided to do something special. She and her Univar rep assembled a team of experts to train the faculty on integrated pest management, covering basics like the difference between repellants and non-repellants.

“The teachers had tons of questions and were chasing us around,” Hughes says. “They were saying, ‘Can you come to my room next? Lemme show you what I’ve got.’”

Education is a core value at Wilson’s Pest Control. Along with handwritten thank-you cards, it’s how the family business aims to implement what Hughes calls the “Chick-fil-A experience.” Technicians go the extra mile to explain every step of the process to customers.

Hughes says a shared appreciation for outside-the-box service is why she likes working with Univar – especially her rep, Wade Sanders. In addition to the teacher training, he’s helped provide puppets and coloring books for the students.

Hughes still stops by the school to check in with the teachers. And when she isn’t working, Hughes spends time with her own two children, ages 3 and 7. They’re already leading training sessions of their own.

“They’ll be like, ‘That’s a good spider. Don’t mess with it,’” Hughes says. “Meanwhile, all the other kids on the playground are freaking out.”
