It is no secret that the pest control industry is big on training and education, but some PMPs take it to the next level. Sara McGuire at Smithereen Pest Management might be the perfect example.

With a passion for teaching, Sara cites coaching and mentoring as her favorite aspect of her job. “I love working with technicians in the field and helping them learn,” she said “I think in this industry it is really important to value good teachers and mentors.”

A lot of Sara’s enthusiasm for education comes from the start of her career. Directly after walking off stage with her Master’s Degree in Entomology, Sara stepped into training with Smithereen, which became one of her greatest learning experiences.

“It was a trial by fire. My first lesson was on a job in the middle of the night. I was on my hands and knees in a tight crawlspace wearing a HAZMAT suit amidst an enormous rat infestation! I learned a lot about applying complex IPM strategies to fix the issue.”

Sara was proud to tell us today, that crawl space and the surrounding site have been rat-free for eight years now. To overcome that initial challenge, she worked on a team to put all of that knowledge to good use.

To keep up with all of their company expertise, Smithereen chose to partner with Univar. Sara cited Univar’s mastery of all things pest control, and her rep Bill Dyra as the big reasons for the “outstanding” relationship between Smithereen and Univar.

And when it comes to outstanding pest control operations, Sara has a lesson for other PMPs:

“My best advice is to hold on to your mentors, whether it be for your own growth or business growth. Their knowledge is what really can take you to the next level.”
